Position: Intermediate Programmer/Analyst
Reports to: Director, Information Technology
Taking day-to-day direction from a Development Team Leader
Status: Full Time
Location: Toronto
Purpose:
Taking day-to-day direction from a Development Team leader, formally
reporting to the Director of Information Technology and working closely
with peers and users from various Markel departments, the Intermediate
Programmer/Analyst is responsible for programming primarily in the Progress
computer language.
The incumbent analyzes user requirements for small projects and works from
specifications to design, code and test computer systems.
Key Accountabilities
For existing and new computer programs: 90% of the job
* Interprets specifications and programming requirements.
* May interviews users at a detailed level and analyze/document user
requirements. Also works with users to ensure accuracy and
completeness of user-developed system enhancement specifications.
* Analyzes detailed system factors, including input and output
requirements, information, flow and software requirements.
* Designs, documents, codes and tests programs.
* Documents unit test plans as required.
* Develops and executes conversion and implementation plans as
required.
1%-5% of job
* Provides project time estimates.
* Maintains project status updates within the department "Workgroup"
environment.
* Works with Business groups and other members of the IT department
to provide demos, advice and guidance in the effective use of
software.
Remainder of the job
* Reviews existing processes and meets with users/management to
determine systems solutions necessary to achieve greater
efficiency of operations and improved customer service.
* Is responsive to Markel's internal clients.
* Builds positive relationships within IT and the business community.
Key Competencies
* Post Secondary Education (Computer Science Degree is preferred)
and/or equivalent on the job experience.
* Minimum of three years of programming experience with proficiency
in all aspects of computer programming in Progress V9.1 (mainly
character based).
* User-level knowledge of MS Office Suite of Products (including
Outlook) and Windows environment.
* Knowledge of Systems Development Methodologies and Systems
Development Life Cycle Phases and knowledge of formal project
management principals.
* Proven track record in meeting deadlines.
* Good problem solving and analytical skills.
* Excellent interpersonal skills.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Other Requirements
* Knowledge of the Trucking Insurance Industry including Claims
Processing, Underwriting, Reinsurance and Policy and forms
Generation, Management Reporting and Data warehousing.
* Proficiency with Sun Solaris UNIX would be a definite asset.
* Knowledge of multiple programming languages, business intelligence
tools and database management systems would be an asset, in order
of importance: VB.NET, SQL Server 2000, Progress GUI, Business
Objects, MS Access, Excel macros, HTML and dynamic HTML, XML, ASP,
JavaScript, Flash, and MYSQL.
