I am trying to decide which Progress development platform to buy license for, to start working on my own. I need to select one for creating and installing Databases for 5-20 users on Windows server, and for developing GUI and Webspeed applications.
Because I have not tried OpenEdge 10 platform, can please someone, tell my if it is a more advanced 'Progress' whice tools, for GUI development and RDBMS? OR should I purchase the 9.1B which I already know?
If anyone can gide me to a license to purchase it would be most helpfull. And can anybody tell me the cost of it as well?

Moush,

Progress 4 GL can be run both on Unix and Windows environment. It depends on what exactly is the requirement of the Client/product that you will develop and even your personal choice matters.

One single development licence of Progress 4 GL (containing Progress Application Development Tools, Database, Protools etc) cost around $3000 USD. You can reach PSC them and get better deals if you are planning to purchase more licences. The marketing dept. is quite efficient and responds quickly.

OpenEdge is a Progress framework and helps in Rapid Application Development. I am not aware how much this costs.

Hope this information helps.

OpenEdge costs alot.... :( I'm starting to look at other programming alternatives, but PROGRESS is an easy language to pick up and get complex programs/reports done fast.

I do recommend getting ProVision Plus 9.1D for Windows. ProVision includes:
- Workgroup database (14 user license I think)
- 2 agent license WebSpeed
- 2 agent license AppServer
- Sonic MQ
- Appserver Internet Adapter
- AppBuilder and ProTools
- Results
- ProBuild
- 4GL Development
- Character Development
- Client Networking for remote client connections to the DB

Having the DB on a Unix/Linux server performs much better, but if you want to use ProVision Plus for tools, you would have to buy an extra Workgroup DB license for the Unix Server because ProVision is for Win32 only.
