How to check database is down in a web appliation?

My web appliation is using web speed and progress database. I want to check if database is shutdown and want to display appropriate message such as "Application is under maintenance" if any one hits the page . Can anybody help me how to achieve this?

I am not so familiar with WebSpeed - so please bear with me ...

Actually I think what you describe is not easy to achieve in the way you think. Probably if you look at it from a different perspective the solution is rather easy. When the database is down most likely the WebSpeed agents are down too. Therefore the user will get the "yellow screen of death" from the WebSpeed messenger. The page that is returned in that case is configurable.
