I can see the need in a communication layer more than in the application database .. the problem there is less well fit to a relational data model to start with. But, couldn't one solve the requirement with word index on clob simply by adjusting the word break rules? The reason I keep coming back to that is that, while we don't have that either, it seems like a fairly simple extension of capability compared with a whole new datatype that had its own special functionality plus word index on CLOB could be used for a ton of things.
