10.1B client connecting to 9.1D server

I'm going to be upgrading our server to 10.1B this year. Instead of rolling out 10.1b to all the clients at the same time I was looking to roll them out gradually while still connecting to our 9.1D server. Is this possible? Syteline 6.01 is our current app we're running.

I am a little unclear about your proposal since you talk about upgrading the server and then talk about connecting to an old server. Can you clarify the sequence? I.e., are you proposing to do the clients first or the server first? And, is this a client/server connection or via AppServer.

We have a client/server configuration. The overall goal is to upgrade the server and clients to 10.1B. My question is could we roll the clients out first and then roll the server upgrade out. Or do we have to upgrade the server first and the clients at the same time.

That's an admirable goal but you should be aiming at 10.1C or possibly even 10.2A not 10.1B. 10.1C is a current release. 10.1B is not. 10.1B03 has serious bugs (like the PURGE lock problem) that will never be fixed. 10.1C is still getting service packs.

To answer your question -- yes. You must upgrade the clients prior to (or simultaneous with) upgrading the server. You can do a rolling client upgrade if that is more convenient.

But all of the clients must be upgraded when the server is upgraded. A v9 client cannot communicate with an OE 10 db.

Yes.

But, again, you should not be looking to deploy 10.1B. You should be deploying 10.1C or 10.2A. 10.1B has known serious bugs that are not going to be fixed. If you can upgrade from 9.1D to 10.1B (which, of course, you can) it is no more difficult to upgrade to 10.1C.

Why would you upgrade from one unsupported release to another unsupported release?
