Wrong Serial and Control# used, can I just change the progress.cfg?

I installed a server in to production with a set of serial and control# meant for another server.
Can I just swap out the progress.cfg on a Linux build where the file is found in the database folder?

I do the same thing with a windows workstation on the client install so I'm just trying to make sure I won't affect anything in production.
