Why Is Isql Faster Than Odbc When Using The Progress Odbc Driver?

I'm integrating a LAMP stack application with Progress DB using the Progress ODBC driver for Unix/Linux. There are huge speed differences between the usage of >isql on the command line an Apache using the odbc driver over PHP. Does any have any idea why this would be the case? Both methods should be using the same ODBC driver...
