What is Graphical and Character applications?

Anyone knows the difference betwwen Graphical and Character applications, it seems the same to me?

When is the more suited environment to deploy each applications effectively?

• started by prowin32.exe or prowc.exe
• microsoft windows only
• has graphical user elements

ChUI (character user interface)

• started by _progres.exe or _progres on *nix
• microsoft 'dos box' or *nix
• has characters only
