What actually makes an e-commerce website difficult to scale?

A lot of e-commerce websites look simple from the outside, but I’ve noticed that things get much more complicated once the business starts growing.

Initially, you may only need a product catalog, payment gateway, shipping and a basic admin panel. Later you start dealing with ERP integration, inventory synchronization, multiple warehouses, customer segmentation, automation, analytics and third-party systems.

That’s where choosing the right ecommerce development services becomes important, in my opinion. The development approach needs to support the business model rather than just make the website look good.

One thing I’ve seen businesses underestimate is integrations. A store may work perfectly during the first year, but the underlying architecture becomes a problem when order volume and operational requirements increase.

For those running larger online stores, what caused the biggest technical problems as your business scaled?

Was it performance, integrations, customization, inventory, checkout, or something else?
