Running Backup Exec on Live Databases

Hi there,

This may be a very simple answer but we are currently backing up our Progress databases using Backup Exec 12 whilst the databases are shut down. We know that backing up the database files whilst the database is running will cause the database to go into 'safe mode' and shut down to protect itself (we were bitten by that previously). Do you know if having backup exec verify the location where the db files are stored whilst the database is running would do any damage?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks and regards.

Maybe to quick replied, I don't know any backup Exec 12 tool. But why not use probkup online?

BTW: Does backup exec 12 also backs up ai files?

Casper.

Hi Casper,

Yes Backup Exec does backup the ai files. We run backup exec to cover everything off that server inc database which is just a small part of the contents. Backup exec would be my choice but the powers that be have over-rulled that decision.
Its just the verify option we are not sure about. It seems to be ok so far but it could just be that we are getting lucky with the files its touching at particular times!

I don't know the product specifically, but as a general rule, most backup programs will not safely back up a running Progress database because doing so requires being aware of Progress internals and who but PSC is going to bother with that. What does work, however, is to use probkup online to do a backup to disk and then use your backup product to back up the disk image.
