Progress, Veritas, and SRDF

We have two servers in a failover environment where the application and DB are on the SAN and SRDF does synchronous replication only between the two AIX operating systems.

Once we implemented this, we started having huge performance issues (slow response in the application) when a lot of users were logging in at once and during peak times of the day. I set the -spin parameter to 15000 (since we have 4 CPUs and was previously set to 0); however, I'm still not sure that that was the "smoking gun" for our slow down. Any ideas?

AIX 5.3
Progress 9.1E (no service packs)

We haven't had any performance issues since we set the -spin parameter, but it's hard to believe that all of the sudden we would start having performance issues and that one change fixed.

The -spin parameter is the closest thing to a "silver bullet" as you'll ever see...

Having said that I agree that it is very likely that you have other problems. The fact that it wasn't set in the first place argues strongly that you haven't got a reasonably tuned system. Progress database performance tuning is a big topic and the specifics depend to a large degree on the application that you are running.

You could, of course, hire a consultant to come in and take a look -- My personal favorite would be this guy -- http://www.greenfieldtech.com ;)

Or you could post the gory details of your configuration and we could take a stab at it online -- your mileage may vary...
