Progress on a Tablet?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has experience of deploying progress applications to a tablet/mobile device? We have a windows-based application that our userbase is looking to access using a tablet/mobile-device. I know there is a pretty fully-featured version of Windows 7 available for tablets but am wondering if Progress is compatible with this.

I'd rather stay away from an implementation with Webspeed if possible.

While one can run Progress on a Windows tablet, I'm not sure that it is good general solution. I have PDSOE on my Lenovo Yoga Pro 2, but it has a keyboard and a very nice rodent so it makes a nice traveling machine. The usual solution to what you want to do is OE Mobile since that is going to provide you access to all Android and iOS devices, but does imply talking to AppServer. OE Mobile is a lot better solution than Webspeed since Webspeed is merely working with the device's browser, which does not have access to any device features like GPS or motion sensors. OE Mobile works with HTML5 running inside a native container and the container provides access to the device features ... best of both worlds.

Thanks for that. Probably should have explained that our app is touch based so doesn't need a mouse and keyboard. We have it on a few fixed terminals but there is a requirement for it to be available away from the fixed terminal hence the requirement for a tablet. The app is ready to go so installation on a tablet as-is will allow quick implementation. We don't need to access any device features for this particular project but I take your point on board and this is something that would be of use for other projects we are looking at. Really need to have a good look at OE Mobile to see what it can bring us..

I would. If you have the background infrastructure in place, you could deploy very quickly and flexibly ... BYOD as they say.

If this is something like a warehouse app where you don't need general BYOD type capabilities or you aren't trying to expose it to the outside world, I would try it on a W8 tablet and see how it works. It might well be load and go and solve your problem for now. If you have aspirations of more, then I would explore OE Mobile, at least for the next round.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Getting hold of a tablet to test the software on (Win 7). It will mean that the same software will work on our fixed-point terminals (PC-based) and the tablets.
