Meals on Wheels successfully streamlined warehouse and inventory management with Kechie, an enterprise resource planning system designed by My Office Apps and built on Progress OpenEdge.

In this Success Story Spotlight, we look at Meals on Wheels San Francisco, a nonprofit that operates a robust daily home-delivered meals program for thousands of older adults, generally aged 60 and older, who are homebound and food insecure. Using OpenEdge, Meals on Wheels San Francisco reached its goal of delivering 30,000 meals in a single day and transformed how they deliver to their clients.

CHALLENGE

Meals on Wheels has devised large-scale food storage processes and systems that allow more food products to be securely refrigerated and kept for use in order to produce high-quality meals at an incredibly high capacity. Meals on Wheels needed an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system that could do the following:

  • Provide accurate inventory information, accounting for substitutions in real time
  • Track food costs and expiration dates to minimize food loss
  • Enable the flexibility to create new meal combinations
  • Provide authorization capabilities
  • Seamlessly integrate with the third-party food distributors

The ERP systems' assurance that nothing was falling through the cracks was crucial because 4,000 older persons in San Francisco rely on Meals on Wheels for their daily nutritional needs.

SOLUTION

Meals on Wheels chose Kechie, a fully integrated, cloud-based ERP from My Office Apps (MOA). Its sophisticated, user-friendly software has a simple user interface and comprehensive pre-built reporting capabilities, making it easy for new users to get up and running quickly.

As Frank Scott, Director of Fleet and Facilities, Meals on Wheels San Francisco, explained, “The Kechie software solution will allow us to monitor our end-to-end supply chain management from procurement, inventory, and tracking to the end destination, which is into the refrigerators of our meals recipients.” Kechie was implemented throughout the organization, from the kitchen to the inventory rooms and the meal deliveries.

RESULT

Meals on Wheels has onboarded additional users as a result of the partnership with MOA and Progress, increasing from 5 to 17 in the San Francisco chapter. This enables Meals on Wheels San Francisco to meet its goal of delivering 30,000 meals in a single day and has changed the way the organization serves its clients.

The organization has improved its warehouse inventory and internal distribution after a year of using the Kechie Management System. They were able to streamline their operations thanks to the My Office Apps.
