Thanks, Adriano - yes, the DB is already multi-volume so we are good there. For the conversion between 8/9, we've tried the proutil Conv89 command both with and without the -z argument (that argument was in the upgrade .bat scripts). Not sure what that arg does, but figured I would add that extra detail in case it is helpful to you or somebody else reading the post.
