GSC (guess/speculation/conjecture): Try running rm with the full path ( /bin/rm) or wherever rm is supposed to live on HP-UX. If this is a not a server you maintain, it's anyone's guess if there are "helpful" aliases or scripts placed "in-front of" /bin/rm You can also give "unlink" a try.
