James, Thanks for this but it did not work - I shutdown the database using the proenv - cd to the /wrk/db directory where the sports db is located and ran proshut sports -by and this worked I then tried clicking on the "Start Database" in the Progress Explorer tool and after a while it just timed out I am running the latest classroom edition of Progress - OpenEdge 11.7 (64-bit) on windows. I am not sure what is starting the database automatically - but something in the setup as going through the tutorial - they are always running when PC reboots. Robert
