LDF attributes are set on records and a User object would have a L, D & F configured. Groups is what brings the LDF to life. A user can be part of multiple groups and a group's LDF attributes will define what records the user has access to. An LDF group equivalent to an administrator role would have L,D & F set to "Any". Roles are restricted in the sense that a user can only be part of one role only. While he can be part of many LDF groups which are logical roles.
