They weren't connected for long really. I think that it's the VM backups that are causing the issue. I will be asking them to exclude the database directory from the backups and see if it sorts the problem. One good thing about all of this is that I've reduced the probkup time from 6 hours+ to just over an hour by deleting the backup file first. Nice easy win! :)
