For my case, where I needed to get rid of the ERROR-STATUS:ERROR I’d’ve had to add code (possibly in a finally block) to all the places to remove the error status. I thought that this way was better. And yes, to your atomicity point. I believe that in my case it was mainly temp-table based so that wasn’t a consideration.
