I know there are other discussions about adding a GUID data type or other such methods to accomplish this. However, several applications have already been using a GUID and storing it in a character field. This idea would allow for a character field to be initialized as 'GUID' in the schema definition .df file. This would be the same as the TODAY initial value is supported for date data types. This would mean that an initial value of GUID would need to become a reserved keyword for the schema definition, but I doubt that would have impact on anyone. Any application already using the character field to store GUIDs would simply need to change their initial value to move to this change.
