New to Progress

Hi All,

My company is looking for a new software package for our day to day operations. Two packages run on Progress databases and one runs on MS SQL.

What I would like to know is what are the advantages of running on Progress versus running on SQL. Is one harder to maintain than the other? Relibility of uptime?

I am not a Programer, I am more of a server, network type. We are leaning towards one of the packages written in Progress and I just want to know of any pitfalls to watch out for.

By the way is a great Forum.

Thank You

John

Advantage #1) Progress can run on UNIX servers. Including Linux.

Not that I'm biased or anything

Even if you're a hard-core MS bigot it's good to have options.

Progress is pretty simple to set up and work with. It is considered an "embedded" database. That is to say it is almost always packaged with an application. It isn't a general purpose db like, say, Oracle or MS-SQL and so is less of a "house-hold name". (We have a term for that -- "Progress who?") But it can scale to very large sizes and can do just about anything that you need an embedded db to do. It'll never be bleeding edge but it doesn't need to be.
