There is a new forum called freepeg

http://freepeg.gonetweb.com is the host;

the forum link to the PEG is listed on the first page,

or you can access it this way:

This is a new startup, but promises to never charge for anything. I am sure they will accept donations, but they are basically (besides the host) using free hosting services.

The advantage to the frepeg forum is that it has more topics and they are arranged more nicely.

I am sure it will grow, once the word gets out.

Here are some more advantages
1. We have more features and more up to date information/forums/topics..

2. Mobility: now you have the ability to both read and post from any location, without your personal or business computer attached, with out your email client.
2b. Now you can view only the messages you want, and not have to filter through messy emails
2c. You wont need a separate email addr for each forum you subscribe to

8b. Aren't you tired of having to pay for something when it says its Free or should be Free? This technology is virtually maintenance Free, so we have almost zero overhead.
9. All forums appear on one page, organized by the following categories:

> Previous Technical
> Platforms OS HW Prog Lang/Tools
> Resources (Utilities, training, consultants, developers, user groups etc)
> Applications built using PROGRESS
> Futuristic including new opensource etc.
> Job Resources (job listings, resumes (post for Free), recruiters, contractors etc.
and more....
 
atleast change the name... it makes the motivation behind the website
somewhat suspicious and personal, to say the least


i think, what we need is new context not new features
i'm not sure there's such a great demand for a new progress forum

progresstalk is a great forum with all the features you'll need

i wouldn't even call peg a forum, it's REALLY! in need of a face lift
but ofcourse it's the people who make it what it is


one thing i would like to see is a site dedicated to teaching progress

structured learning courses, organizing study groups and what ever else
i think, that's something alot of us will use

another thing that could draw in people is maybe
consulting or selling services and jobs online, if there was one i wouldn't leave it

I disagree, but maybe you can explain, and that point it would be hard to change the name....
it is all personal, because too many things that should be free today, are not. It's all about doing things the right way, making it better and more up to date.

as far as new content, this new freepeg forum is all about new content, whatelse do you suggest?

yeh but you have to subscribe to access some of them, what a waste of money, I'd rather invest it in Progress stock.

I agree it needed a facelift, and that's one reason we started this site.

that my consulting group is working on, we are working with new webcast technologies to be able to do that, we are trying to finish some other projects first. But we have the plans well documented and the testing of it almost complete.

Free ped already has that draw, it has consulting services, and jobs online, and the posts are all free.

Selling services is a great idea, that kind of forum could be started.

I am going to continue this discusssion on freepeg forum.

i think it represents alot of the "bad" ( for lack of a better word ) things
it's far from being a noble cause...

but i guess, if the forum will be good so will the name

i just can't see the sense in another progress forum
i think you're trying to sell people something they don't need

bottom line it's another progresstalk
which was also created to improve on peg short comings

and it's not like progresstalk is such a big success story

it can be much more practical then that

how about an overall suggestion how to study a certain subject
dba, gui, web and even windows api and .net

citing the needed resources
edocs, useful websites, buying books etc.

organizing study groups and someone to oversee and offer guidance


ofcourse with a name like freepeg you'll have a hard time
getting people to help who are involved with peg

which is about every guru worth knowing
including the ones from progress software


now that's a service that i think alot of people could use
i think, that is the fundamental thing we're trying to do here... learn

honestly, it is a technical progress forum so it needs a technical progress name like ????? or something, I will play around with it.

thats the point, i am not selling anything, (but I know what you mean); my point is and I have a few that agree (even some at progress soft. corp) that there is a need for something better, there always is, the trick is finding what "better" is, and then implimenting it.

Too bad, I wish it was, or a better re-invention of the PEG, which is what I am trying to do.

the webcase will teach on the above subjects and more like flash (which most wesites are moving to flash based pages and implementing xml and progress into flash is very possible

I agree

and agree that getting PEG'rs to switch to anything else is challanging.

that's how a better project is mastered. believe me I have wrote my share of Progress App's based on learning what the user really needs and sometimes I had to start over from scratch and go back to the drawing board,

hi,

now why would you go and start another forum. How are you going to get all the valuable information thats already out there.

I would think there should be an easier way to share information between forums. Like how you can see peg information on progresstalk. You should be able to work out something with chris and create a mirror progresstalk forums. That would reduce the downtime (if there is any) and also the information is available both places. You can have all the extras on your site like macromedia, rss feeds, no membership fee :), free Stuff :) etc..

Just an opinion..

if you do comeup with a progress and flash tutorial
i think, alot of people would be interested! i know i'll be there

it might help get things started
and you'll also be providing a great service to the community

for what it's worth, if it get's going and when i'll get some free time on my hands
i could help setting up courses on gui, adm and dynamics


but again i think it has to be different
there are already webcasts and documentation about almost anything in progress

i like the idea of study groups other then having to study alone
and having someone to mentor and offer guidance, but that's just my opinion
 
I would recommend that anyone interested should probably continue this discussion on the freepeg/progresstech forum.
