Need some Examples on Serial Port communication

Hi Everybody,
I have got only basic stuffs on Serial Port communication through Progress 4GL. i like to increase my stuffs in those areas.

So can anyone give me some simple suitable examples to understand the concept better. I need to read the data from some hand-held devices...

Can anyone help me out??? :confused:
