Do I need Enterpise Licences?

19+ years progress programming and still learning.
Hi all.

Currently we have a 8 User Database (10.2A) with OE WebSpeed, OE AppServer and OE Replication and were where sold the Enterprise edition.

My questions is do I need the entripise edition of OpenEdge or could I get away with using the WorkGroup licences of OpenEdge?

The production databases are small and have very low transactions.

I can't find any information on the Progress website that the Enterprise edition is needed to run the OE Replication and OE WebSpeed.

Can anyone confirm this thanks.
 
There are some differences between the workgroup and enterprise licenses, most of them are relevant to performance.
  • Workgroup database does not support background writers (before image writer, after image writer and the asynchronous page writers)
  • Workgroup database does not support multiple CPUs
  • Workgroup database allows a maximum of 63 (or 64?) connections (that are processes connected to the database) and from what I know you can't buy more than 50 user licenses ...
  • Workgroup database does not support large files
Don't know if the workgroup database support OE Replication but I doubt. Ohters may know more here.

It does seem a little over the top for such a small lightly used application. Even by my standards.

But perhaps the business person who signed the check felt that it was extremely important to have the best possible performance and the highest availability? Maybe that person knows something with regards to future plans for expansion? Or maybe the Progress sales person got that person to sign over a few beers? (Unlikely, PSC sales people are notoriously unable to pick up bar tabs.)

Anyhow... I've never heard that WG excludes OE Replication. But I've also never considered implementing OE Replication in such a setting.
 
Don't know if Progress has a subsidiary in New Zealand of if they are supported by the Australian organization ...

But, if they are supported by the Australian organization, since I happen to knew some of the guys from Down Under, I suspect they indeed were able to pick up bar tabs in the past for they really, really, really like beer :awink:

Originally we had the workgroup edition but we where then tolled (by Progress software)that we needed to enterprise if we wanted to implement replication.

Unless AI watches are needed for replication, I don't known?
 
It hasn't been a widely advertised limitation but it would make a lot of sense as a limit.

You could try installing the old WG license, enabling replication and seeing what happens ;)
