WEIRD errors when connecting a database

I'm trying to connect to a remote database using -H -S -N. I can telnet to that location, ftp to the location, but the connect just LOCKS for about 5 minutes then gives me a "Error reading socket -1". This MUST be a networking error, but my network administrator sees nothing wrong. I need help FAST!! Anyone have any ideas???
 
1. Check the database ".lg" (log) file for errors.
2. Try and telnet to the "port" -S that the database is running on and see if you can connect
