I think that wouldn't speed up things a lot, but you can use webservices like you would do normally. So write a procedure to connect to a webservice as you would normally do.
Once again, webpseed isn't something very strange or complex it is just a mechanism to generate web pages in progress. You can use server side all the progress you like. I never tried it, but I see no reason to not be able to call a webservice.
