In part 3 of his data performance series, Jesse Davis describes his disdain for delays. Also read part two of the series: “Data Performance in a Digital Universe.

Delays? I’ll tell you about delays. When it comes to your technology, your apps, your customers, delays equal D.O.A. Nothing says throwback faster than waiting for something to happen.

That’s the world my seven-year-old son lives in. When I’m traveling to another country and he wants to call me–if it takes more than ten seconds to connect, he gets agitated. He’s used to living in a world, as are most of us nowadays, where you can connect by phone, text or even conduct business on the internet instantly.

As a species, we’ve really become very impatient. Our new normal is essentially real time with little variation. It’s the result of superior performance in technology driven by customer demand.

Keep Your Competitive Edge

If your apps or services produce delays, then you’re not meeting customer expectations. Customers will put up with an occasional delay, maybe two, but more than that and your business will be at risk.

I remember in college, say surfing with Netscape, and you’d say, “Oh, cool, I’m going to load this webpage.” You’d click, turn to your buddy, enjoy some coffee and conversation while the page loaded.

Anything less than peak performance puts you at a disadvantage. Performance can mean the difference between the millisecond or five milliseconds that keeps you competitive. So it’s very interesting to see not only how connected we are, but how much we rely on performance to continue to improve the human experience as it relates to technology.

Fastest in the Industry

The drivers my team and I build here at Progress DataDirect are designed to be the fastest in the industry, and we stand behind that claim with award winning technical support. When you find performance degradation issues in our software, we treat them like any defects because we understand how important speed is to your business.
