User disconnects during on-line backup

It has come to my attention that I have users that lose the connection (SELF) to my application (QAD) when I am performing the nightly online backup of my databases. I am going to monitor system activity tonight to see what is going on at this time (i.e. extended CPU at 100% or something). I just thought I would throw it out there to the gurus to determine what else to look for. The database in question (OE 10.1C) is 23 Gb in size, so it is not all that big. It takes 10-15 (longer at month end) minutes to back it up. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Define what you mean by losing their connection... are they actually being disconnected? With a resulting message in the .lg file? That ought to say something interesting about the nature of the disconnection...

Or are they complaining that their session isn't as responsive as they wish that it would be? Or maybe taking it upon themselves to reboot their PC in hopes that things get better?

Nothing about a backup should be resulting in users being disconnected by Progress. I can't vouch for any other possible agents of disconnection.
