User attribs

Greetings all,
I like the idea of attributes and would like to set my own. What is the syntax for setting/creating user attributes?
I wish to do something like:
hdl:HAT = red.

How do I define a custom attribute? Would this value to global or would I need a hdl eg DO IN h_var : hdl:HAT = red.

I wish to set/have an attribute in v9.1 D called 'hat'. I then wish to assign at some point hats value to be red. What is the syntax for this?
I wish to do this using ADM2 & SO. I wish to assign the value in a viewer/SDO and retrieve the value of hat from a seperate viewer/SDO do I need handles or will the value of my attribute be global?
