DIY Application Development

If you think “Develop Your Own Application” (DYOA) is just a theory, think again. One Texas mom, who was tired of her son not answering her calls and texts, decided to invent an app that gives kids no choice but to reply to their parental units — by locking their phones. It took her months working with developers to produce the final app called “Ignore No More.”

Not-So-Secret Sauce for Rapid Application Development

The good news is that independent research clearly shows that for professional developers and tech-savvy business users who are creating applications and taking app dev into their own hands, there is a faster, better, cheaper way — with Platform as a Service (PaaS) technologies. PaaS is a cloud-based platform that allows custom business applications to be quickly developed and deployed using a drag-and-drop, point-and-click interface in a web browser.

PaaS Is a Game Changer

Vanson Bourne (an independent marketing research firm) recently conducted a study around rapid application development and PaaS technologies. The spring 2014 survey of 700 IT decision makers in mid-sized organizations from around the world shows a soaring demand for PaaS from organizations looking for faster development and deployment cycles. A best-in-class PaaS offers options that allow greater developer control and agility as well as enhanced productivity from faster development and deployment cycles from less coding.

Results Are In!
The Vanson Bourne survey reveals 10 key findings including:

1) 93% - Overall development of new applications improved with PaaS
2) 95% – Overall deployment of new applications improved with PaaS
3) 85% – Are under pressure to reduce new application development and deployment time
4) 48% – Are already using PaaS to develop and deploy new applications
5) 54% – Reduced timescales using PaaS
6) 51% – Reduced costs for development with PaaS
7) 42% – Improved ability to continuously monitor, test and develop
8) 47% – Increased scalability and capacity for innovation
9) 69% – Anticipate that their organizations will be “mobile first” within a year
(compared with 20% of those without PaaS)
10) 77% – Plan to invest in PaaS in 2014, with an average spend of more than $250K

Futurecast for Rapid App Dev

The study anticipates that because of these benefits, the use of PaaS for application development and deployment will continue to be a focus for organizations—whether you’re in devOps or a “citizen developer” taking app dev into your own hands.
