Searching for Progress .p files with Windows XP

One thing that came up recently is that when searching for Progress programs that contained a particular text string, the Windows XP search didn't kick up anything. However, when the same search was done using a Windows 2000 box, about 40 files kicked up.

As it turns out, Microsoft re-designed it's search application and one of the new "features" (and I use that word VERY loosly) is that it will not search files when it doesn't know what the file is. Since it doesn't know what a ".p" is, it won't search it. See article 309447, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309447/en-us for more information on this.

Has anyone else ever encountered this before? Are there any solutions from Progress for this? Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,
-Ed

Brown stuff

Greetings,

RE:

Bin the brown stuff, that is also known as Microsoft (very brown) Windows (even browner). When Bill Stole the principle ideas for Windows from Xerox, and labeled it Micro$oft he flushed the product down the toilet. Get rid of Windows is the answer, move to Unix / Unix based products such as Linux.

Yep,

I encountered this a long time ago. If you want I can give you a vb script which solves the problem.

Casper.

Use Copernic Desktop Search. It's free, 'Instant' (a couple of secs per search each time after initial install build), and recognises any text file type you designate (eg. .p, .i. .w, .pf, etc.)

Alternatively, there are a couple of suggestions on this thread:

Thanks for the feedback everyone.:)

I downloaded & installed Copernic Desktop Search at Lee's suggestion, and it definately solved the problem. After the initial install/config, it was a breeze to use. Ran much faster then the search tool that was with windows 2000. You do have to initially set it up to search for Progress files, and any network drives you want to search -- very easy to do (my 5 year old could probably figure it out).
