Get firewall-friendly connectivity to any on-premises MySQL Community Edition-based deployment over standard interfaces with Hybrid Data Pipeline 4.1.

With release 4.1, Progress DataDirect Hybrid Data Pipeline supports MySQL Community Edition (CE). We now provide firewall-friendly on-premises connectivity over standard SQL (ODBC, JDBC), and REST (OData) to any MySQL CE-based deployments.

What Are the MySQL Community Forks?

MySQL is the most popular open source RDBMS. MySQL, originally created by a Swedish company called MySQL AB, was first acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2008. MySQL later became a part of Oracle when Oracle bought Sun Microsystems in 2010.

During these acquisitions, the MySQL community began to worry about the future of MySQL. At this point, several active contributors started forking the project. The day Oracle announced the purchase of Sun Microsystems, Michael Widenius forked MySQL and launched MariaDB, taking a swath of MySQL developers with him. Some of the other major forks from the MySQL codebase are MySQL Community Edition, Percona Server, WebScale and Drizzle.

This led to a huge ecosystem of databases that are based on MySQL CE and its forks. All these databases will support MySQL’s wire protocol and we will refer to “MySQL CE” in this blog to cover all of these databases.

Hybrid Data Pipeline Now Supports MySQL CE

Until today, Hybrid Data Pipeline only supported the MySQL Enterprise Edition. With version 4.1, the solution supports the Community Edition as well, based on customer feedback. This means you can use the open source MySQL CE JDBC driver to plug into Hybrid Data Pipeline. Once you plug it in, you can:

  • Produce OData from (RESTify) your MySQL CE database
  • Provide a secure data gateway to access an on-premises MySQL CE instance from the cloud
  • Provide a single interface to any cloud data source
  • Open your cloud application based on MySQL CE via ODBC/JDBC/OData for open analytics
Support for MySQL CE Means Support for MariaDB, Percona, MemSQL, Drizzle and Many More

As noted above, many companies have built their databases based on MySQL CE and its forks. And most of these databases support the MySQL wire protocol. So, you could connect to any of these databases with Hybrid Data Pipeline:

  • MySQL CE
  • MariaDB
  • Drizzle
  • Percona
  • MemSQL
  • Webscale
  • InfoBright
  • Amazon Aurora
  • Amazon RDS
  • InfiniDB
  • OurDelta
  • Clustrix
  • ClearDB
  • ParaSQL
Important Features of Hybrid Data Pipeline 4.1

In this release, we are also adding features that make Hybrid Data Pipeline even more robust:

  • Flexible Deployment: In addition to supporting MySQL CE data sources, the 4.1 release expands support for the local configuration database to run on MySQL CE.
  • Throttling: We have incorporated several throttling capabilities such as limiting the number of rows returned per query. Companies can now control how the resources are used by their consumers.
  • Load Balancing: Hybrid Data Pipeline Server can now be installed on any number of nodes behind a commercial load balancer that can route requests to an available server node.
  • Enhanced Silent Installer: The latest enhancements to the silent installer for Hybrid Data Pipeline Server make it easy for DevOps to deploy a new server node by supplying the input file to the installer.
