Currently the information in VSTs doesn't show a true reflection of free space as blocks that previously had records in them that have been deleted are still reported in the used space. You can get the real ustilisation of a storage area from the dbanalys output, but it's a slow process and impacts performance. I'd like to see better reporting of free space in the VSTs, or some similar method) so we can monitor utilisation better. An example: We have an audit database attached to our system. It is showing the last extent of the storage area as 95% used. We realised that the purge routine was broken and fixed it. Now around 50% of the records in the database have been purged, but the utilisation is still at 95%. The only way we can monitor that the database is close to capacity is to track whether the 95% value increases from day to day. And then when the threshold is hit we might only have an hour or two to rectify the situation. Much better to be able to alert at 80% and have time to act. I don't really want to have to add extra extents unless I need to.
