As was mentioned, 9.1.d is super old, and before my time, but what would be more helpful than an strace is the adminserver logs. Usually for things like this, if they are using adminserver then the problem usually is indicated in in the adminserver log in $WORKDIR/admserv.log and or in $WORKDIR/admserv.0. If you can get these file that would be more helpful. then upgrade since he's in a dangerous situation.
