If it is 32 bit you maximum number of buffer blocks (-B) is limited to somewhere around the 300,000 area. I generally use 250,000 on 32 bit servers. If 64 bit you can go up much higher (I have one database on 2000,000). This will likely help if the disk access is the bottle neck. Make sure you don't consume all the RAM.
