[/quote] Luckily the 4GL still has functions so you can pretty much go with the functional programming paradigm if that works for you although I do not see how changing state can be avoided in a business application and I would very much like to keep the 'assign' statement part of the language - regardless of how imperative it might sound - for us mortals that don't write mathematical algorithms in 4GL
