Thomas, it's amazing how we can twist our mind to explain everything regardless how odd it is... if you try hard enough any bug can be packed as a feature :) A null is a valid value, a null equal null (damn, even javascript say so) hence having two records with the same value should not be possible in a unique index but this will probably never change to keep the backward compatibility in place.
