POSITION: INTERMEDIATE PROGRAMMER ANALYST
REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
STATUS: FULL TIME

There is currently an opportunity on our IT team for the position of
Intermediate Programmer Analyst. Reporting to the Director of Information
Technology and working closely with the Senior PA/Project Leader, other
members of the IT department and users from various Markel departments,
the Intermediate Programmer/Analyst is responsible for conducting systems
analysis and programming primarily in the Progress computer language. The
incumbent analyzes user requirements and designs, codes and tests computer
systems.
Key Accountabilities
* Determines and documents, as required, the technical and economic
feasibility of proposed systems solutions.
* Meets with users/management to determine systems solutions necessary
to achieve greater efficiency of operations.
* Interviews users at a detailed level and analyzes and documents user
requirements. Also works with users to ensure accuracy and complete-
ness of user-developed system enhancement specifications as required.
* Interprets, designs, documents, codes and tests existing and new
programs. Analyzes detailed system factors, including input and
output requirements, information, flow and software requirements.
* Performs changes to the test schema's and test data mart's as
required.
* Produces technical programming/unit testing documentation as
required.
* Provides project time estimates.
* Develops and executes conversion and implementation plans.
* Maintains project status updates within the department "Workgroup"
environment.
* Is responsive to Markel's internal clients. Builds positive
relationships and communicates all system changes to users both
before and after implementation.
* Works with Business groups and other members of the IT department to
provide demos, advice and guidance in the effective use of software.
* May work with an outside vendor to support Markel's client/server
General Ledger application (Apogee).
Key Competencies
* Post Secondary Education (Computer Science Degree is preferred)
and/or equivalent on the job experience.
* Minimum of three years of systems programming experience with
proficiency in all aspects of computer programming in Progress V9.1
(mainly character based).
* Knowledge of commercial Insurance Industry including Claims Processing,
Underwriting, Reinsurance and Policy and forms Generation
* User-level knowledge of MS Office Suite of Products (including Outlook)
and Windows environment.
* Knowledge of Systems Development Methodologies and Systems Development
Life Cycle Phases.
* Ability to concurrently participate on multiple projects. Proven track
record in meeting deadlines, and ability to effectively develop and
follow formal project plans.
* Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
* Excellent interpersonal skills.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Other Requirements
* Knowledge of multiple programming languages and database management
systems, in order of importance: Sun Solaris Unix V2, Visual Basic 6,
FoxPro 2.6, Business Objects, MS Access, Unix WordPerfect scripts,
Excel macros, Erwin, Red Brick, Progress GUI, HTML and dynamic HTML,
XML, ASP, Java, Qbasic, Weblogic, FrontPage, Openlink, Jbuilder, ASP,
Flash, SQL Server 2000, Macromedia Coldfusion 5.0, would be an asset.
* Experience with Data Modeling, Physical and Logical design of
Databases/Data warehouses would be an asset.
* Sound knowledge of Accounting/GL principals would be an asset
