Bloor argues in their Self-Service Data Preparation Spotlight that the market is ripe for self-service data preparation solutions.

I want to let you in on a little secret. Despite all the buzz that seems to imply it is a new trend, data preparation has been around for almost as long as people have been collecting and using data to gain insights. As Bloor defines it, data preparation is simply “the art, or science, of combining data from multiple sources and preparing it for analysis.” When it is put that way, data preparation doesn’t seem like anything special. In fact, it is and has been a necessary step for data analysts working on BI for a very long time. So why are we hearing all this hype now?

The big story isn’t just data preparation—it’s self-service data preparation.

Self-serve Business Insights

Before any meaningful analytics can be performed, it is crucial to ensure your data is consistent, accurate, and complete. This means checking everything from filling in missing values and de-duplicating entries to reconciling data in different formats and from different sources. Historically, this has been an extremely involved process, requiring special knowledge that can rarely be found in IT. That means that other business units with a need for analytics were forced to either wait on IT or run the risk of compliance violations and fragmented BI processes.

This is why, Bloor argues in their Self-Service Data Preparation Spotlight, the market is ripe for self-service data preparation solutions. By utilizing a number of algorithms and machine learning capabilities, modern self-service solutions automate what used to be a long and very complex task. According to Bloor, “It is the automation and self-service capabilities that are provided by data preparation platforms that makes them significant.”

Progress® Easyl™ is our horse in the self-service data preparation race. As a cloud-based solution with customizable templates, Easyl earned Progress a spot as an Innovator in Bloor’s Self-Service Data Preparation 2015 Market Update. We expect Easyl to remain a major player as this space continues to grow.
