Progress has "horizontal table partitioning" http://www.progress.com/~/media/Progress/Documents/News%20and%20Events/Exchange2013/Track%205%20-%20Table%20Partitioning.pdf But sharding goes a step furher http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shard_(database_architecture) and could be good to have for us.
