Progress version 9.1d is ancient, obsolete and unsupported. Your friend should upgrade. The admin server is not necessarily required to start the database. It may be required for other reasons but, to begin with, let's first verify that the database is in a healthy state. I am assuming that you have a backup on separate media. If you do not have a backup, create that first. First "cd" to the directory holding the database. Try a simple "pro dbname". Does the database start in single user mode? If it does not -- what errors are reported? If you successfully started the db in single-user mode that's good. Exit that session and try "proserve dbname". Does that work? If it does then connect with "mpro dbname". If all of that works without errors then your database is at least superficially ok and can be started without "proadsv". To get a better idea of if the db has been corrupted run: "proutil dbname -C dbanalys > dbname.dba". This may take a while. It will read the entire database. Assuming that no issues are found you should then determine if you really need the admin server. You will need to ask some questions of your friend. You might need it if the applications uses webspeed or Progress appservers. But if it is a plain old green screen character application there is no need for it and you can proceed without it.
