Even if you can fight off and block the spam, you are still using bandwidth (which I get charged for) in order to figure out if you should accept or reject the mail to begin with.

I like being a Smart*ss, sorry ;)
This is where RBL and reverse DNS can do a marvellous job.

The checks are done before the message gets accepted by the system, because filtering is done based on sender IP. This stops about 95 ~ 98% of spam at the front door, before bandwidth gets burnt.

Feel free to ask me questions, but I guess we can discuss outside this BB :)

Yeah, but 7 years ago when this thread originated, there wasn't the same kind of proliferation of web-based e-mail that there is today. Why should Chris try to compete with gmail? What's the point?

Yes, since then I have implemented RBL and reverse DNS, which has made a major dent in spam and bandwidth use.

But Thomas is correct, most people are happy with a gmail, hotmail or yahoo account, so there isn't much point in providing a service like this anymore.

Errr... Sorry guys
I overlooked the fact that the thread is ancient and kind of died 7 years ago.
I'll leave it at that, sorry for the noise. Gmail is good enough.
