Tracking tooling with MFG/PRO

We are a manufacturer supplying the automotive market. One of the issues
in our business is
managing tooling used to produce component parts i.e. how much does a tool
cost, what is its capacity,
what is its lifetime, where is it located etc. I have to believe that this
requirement is common within the automotive sector.

I believe that a tool could be set-up as a component within MFG/PRO but I
am not sure if this is the best way
to approach this problem. Can anyone share with me their experience using
MFG/PRO or some other package to manage tooling?

TIA

We had the same challenge and decided to co-develop with TRW a Tooling
Management Module that is a bolt on to QAD. We have recently implemented in
several of our plants. I suggest you contact TRW for functionality and
pricing.

Brian,
We are a Plastics manufacturer running 8.6e. We were investigating this same idea. The idea was to add our molds (our tooling) to the part master, and the BOM, with a reorder point equal to the the number of units the tool can produce before it requires maintenance. We would then issue the part to the job based on how many units the job was to produce, and then consume it based on the actual. This concept was to give us an idea where the mold was, (1 of 5 plants) and when it needs PM. We never actually put this plan into action. We also had a little function written for us which incorporated cycle time, and cavatation to help us deturmine the effciency and rate of the tool for the routing.
