Hello all. Sorry for the rather n00b question, but I'm flummoxed! I'm getting a prowin32.exe error. "prowin32.exe has generated errors and you will need to restart the program. an error log has been created. " Could anyone tell me where this error log would be located? Thanks!! This is Progress 9.1D running a GUI application.

Thanks in advance!

Further question

Well I've got my hands on the protrace files now that I think are the ones being generated at the error time. I've attached a few. Does anyone know how to interpret them and to establish what might be causing the errors? Thanks loads!

The protrace files aren't going to be much use to you in their current format, although Progress Tech support may be able to decipher them.

There is another entry in the KB to do with translating them, but really you are likely to get further using the client logging I suggested in my 3rd link above.

GOAL:

How to generate a readable Progress Protrace file on Windows

On occasion, when a 4GL application crashes the resulting Protrace
file will only contain the name of a Progress .DLL file rather than
the name of the functions called up to the point of the failure.
In order to resolve function names and produce a readable Protrace
file, the Protrace facility needs to have the DLC\bin folder in the
system Path:

Option #1 - Add the location of the DLC\Bin folder to the system Path
Go to Control Panel > select System > select the Advanced tab > select
the Environment Variables button.
Locate the Path variable in System variables.
Double-click on the Path variable and add DLC\Bin to the end of the
string.
Restart any Progress processes to take into account the change to the
Path.

Hi,

I was wondering what platform you're on, Windows 2003, windows200,XP OR NT?

P45858 suggest upgrading to 9.1D09 if your OS in NT4 or windows2000.
what Service pack level are you on? ($DLC\version).

Same applies for the other windows platforms if you use XMl/SAX when the error happens.

Other error which is fixes in SP09:
20040128-018 Controls SmartWindow with Microsoft Web
Browser. OCX control causes a prowin32.exe
ACCESS_VIOLATION error.

Does the error happens randomly or with a specific program?
If with a specific program could there be an ocx involved or memptr or XML handling then maybe it helps to upgrade to SP09.

Like Lee said 4GL trace is a very good way to determine where the error takes place.

I suppose that in the db log you have a 794 error at the time the error occurs?

Regards,

Casper

Thanks Lee and Casper. I'll pursue the logging line tomorrow and see what I find out.

Thanks again for the help so far. I now have a couple of more readable protrace files attached, although they still make little sense to me!  Anyone got any bright ideas what's happening?

Hi Cringer,

You still have some questions left unanswered (OS, what programs run when error occurs, smart objects?), maybe you could answer them.... Any luck with the 4GL trace?

Casper.

The program that's run is a GUI window with a number of tabs (separate programs for each tab). No smart objects in it AFAIK. The OS is Windows XP as far as I know.
