ODBC vs Dataservers

Hi,

A colleague just asked me a question regarding ODBC ...

Question:
If ODBC is considered to be so great now (as opposed to a couple of years
ago), why do we use the Oracle/AS400 dataservers etc? Isn't it possible to
to access those DBs (and others) from Progress via ODBC?

Has anyone any thoughts on this? Does it make sense? Is it even possible?
If it is possible, do the cost savings benefits of going to ODBC outweigh
the performance risks not using the DataServers?

TIA,
Gord

Gord,

Your colleague is confused with ODBC in and ODBC out. "It's
so much better now" is the ODBC drivers. That's got nothing
to do with the ODBC DataServer. ODBC is still ODBC compared
to native access methods, you really want to avoid the extra
layers if you can.
