Hello all,

Right im new to progress, never looked at it or seen it before, was just given it on cd.

Using PROGRESS Version 9.1C

The project im involved in is to access progress data/queries using ASP.Net WebServices. Is this possible?
Im planning on using the merant ODBC connection that comes on the CD i received.

INSTALLATION:
I have installed progress on a PC that already had IIS5.0 on it.
The installation was a complete install.

So here is my First Problem:
When i open the Progress Explorer it show localhost as the only option available.
Now i try right clicking and connect, then it asks me for a username and password.
However i have no username or password for this so how do i get connected to it

First Problem.

Is your PC XP ??

The PC will have an admin. account. You need to use this to login. Or is your user set up as an administrator of the PC ?? I'm assuming that the database is sat on the PC.

If your database was sat on a UNIX server then the username and password would be the administrator for the UNIX server, i.e. the root account.

Little hint :- To get a faster response on here put down as many details as possible, i.e. operatring system of client, OS of serevr which dbase resides on, Progress Version, etc. etc. It saves the respondent having to ask questions and wait for replies.

Cool thanks for the reply....

It helped sort the problem. Good to know that the windows password will work.

Second Problem:
I have been given a database that i need to connect to. So i Presume I right click new database in the Database section in the progress explorer and give it a name as 'MyTest'

In the database Properties Dialog i enter the path and name of the database.
Its on a shared drive which i have mapped to the Computer im using, so its:
M:\Progress\Test\mytest.db
and click ok

Now i want to start the database, but i get an error message saying
"**This process terminated with exit code1. (8619)
This broker will be terminated when the session ends. (5405)"

i have no idea what this means

Again thanks for any help

hmmmm .

In the same directory as the database you should have a dbasename.lg file.

If you need help interpreting them then please let me know.

There may not be any as it may be that it had problems getting to the database.

Does the database require a username and password to get to it ? If so the connection parameters would need to use the -U username and -P password parameters.

here is an attachment of the files in the directory....
there are a few diff file types eg .lg .db have a look at the attachment.

i previously got it connected before when i installed progress on my pc but it was only the typical install and without the ODBC drivers, that was about a month ago, i only came back to it yesterday. But i ve decide to install it on a test pc.

Have a look in bwgimp.lg this is a Progress log of all connections and errors, etc.

If it's only short and your happy with attaching it here then attach it.

Ok.

There is a problem with the database server and the Admin. Server (software used to connect Progress Explorer)

It's going to be quite difficult for me to remote support this. What I'd suggest is getting one of your Progress admin. guys to get the server started up correctly and the TCP issue resolved.

Unless anyone else can help ?? I tend not to have dbases on windows so cannot give you the best answer.

You always need to define a servicename or portnumber if you start a broker through Progress explorer. This can be either a name which is defined in services file or a portnumber. (Which pretty much can be an arbitrary free portnumber).

-S parameter.

Not exactly sure what you are on about here. How do you start, or even what is a Broker?

If you start a database through progress explorer, then at first you start a broker. Simply said: The broker manages the connections with the database.
If you configure a database through Progress explorer then you also have to fill in Servicenaam or portnumber. If you don't do that then the portnumber deafults to 0, which is an invalid value. That's (porbably) why you get the error message. Even if the database is local, if you start it with Progress Explorer then a servicenaam or portnumber must be set.

To set it: Progress Explorer, Default server group, properties: General: Servicenaam or portnumber.

So the broker starts automatically when i try to start the database? Or do i need to create and start this myself in the AppServer?

I have modified the port number in the Default Server Group options of the database im trying to get working. I have set the port number in it to that in the Server Properties (advanced tab) which is 20931.

But when i try to start the database i still get the error message saying "Process terminated with exit code 1"

Portnumber 20931 is used for connecting the progress explorer to the adminservice which is running on the system, so that's not a free port.
Try something like 12123, that should work....
When you have exit 1 or error then you can lookup in the db log what went wrong.

Guys thanks for the replies finally got the database up and running on the admin server thingy.

I reinstalled it all on my own pc and managed to get it connected.
Could be something to do with the mapped drives etc....

Anyway thats the 1st big issue out of the way

Will need your help with the ODBC Connections

We've done a fair amount of ODBC work (to UNIZ, but, principals the same) so give me a shout if you have any probs. as can be problematic at first attempt.
