EarthLink, Inc., the 2nd largest ISP is currently seeking a Staff Progress
Database Engineer to work in our Atlanta, GA corporate office.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Providing daily (24*7) operational support of Earthlink's Progress
production database environment including on call after hour support.
Responsible for production Progress server installation, configuration
and administration. Providing troubleshooting and resolution for customer
problems including reporting and escalation of all Progress or DB related
issues. Troubleshooting of locking, transactional, performance, memory
usage and other database issues. Perform periodic reorganizations to
optimize database performance. Set up and maintain security on database
connects, MXP menus, and internal database security (table, field) level.
Perform DBA tasks such data import/export, data fixing, reorganization,
table/field/index maintenance, Coding PERL, Shell (sh, csh, and ksh)
scripts to maintain production progress or oracle server batch jobs.
Coding pl/sql to implement customer requirements. Familiar / experience
managing Oracle objects including tables, indexes, views, constraints,
db links, jobs, snapshots etc. Providing data solutions for customers and
ability to dump/load data using sqlldr, imp, exp, rman etc. Performing
database user audit and accounts management. Implementing data replication
and clustering. Providing documentation both automated and manual.
Providing direction in the establishment of best practices and operational
procedures in support of Progress database administration for the Midas
environment. Additional responsibilities will include serving as an
escalation point in resolving production Midas issues, providing input to
architectural decisions pertaining to Midas, and assisting in the refinement
of communication avenues between database administrators and development
organizations as directed by management.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
Experience with Full Client/Server PROGRESS 4GL/RDBMS Development and
Implementation. In addition to experience upgrading from one version to
another. Experience with version 91d and the upgrade to that version.
Experience with Webspeed and Progress smartobjects. Experience using the
dump and load utility. Extensive experience in database implementation,
administration of Oracle7-9i, Progress7-9.1 and SQL2000. Project Management
experience in developing solutions for the enterprise that coincides with
corporate strategies, consolidation initiatives, technological advances,
budget constraints, and customer service. Proven ability to teach and
transfer skills, effectively communicate the intricacies of products and
technologies to development support teams as well as to non-technical
customers in understandable terms. Database Tuning, Backups / Unix
Scripting, Fail over Implementation and crash Recovery, Technical Support,
Full Database Development Life Cycle , Oracle Data Servers , Single to
Multi-Volume Conversions, Dump & Loads of large Dbases, Unix scripting and
Fathom Management support. UNIX script writing for all functions relating
to Progress databases. Well experienced on Oracle 8i/9i installation,
management and troubleshooting. Working in Oracle parallel server
environment or Real Cluster application environment. Working experience on
Oracle application server and other web application servers such as BEA's
weblogic and IBM's websphere. Good at database modeling design not only
OLTP system but also OLAP/DSS system such as star schema. Experience
working in large enterprise database environments with multiple platforms.

C/C++, .NET, HTML, XML and other languages. Familiar with RDBMS management
tools such as Quest Toad, Foglight and spotlight. Ability to perform
operating system level i/o, cpu, memory and disk troubleshooting and
performance tuning tasks using iostat, vmstat, and other tools. Knowledge on
Veritas VM, Veritas cluster server and Netbackup operations. A motivated
team-player, fast learner with ability to effectively communicate both
written and verbally to peers and management. Ability to work under
pressure and in high stress situations. Unix system administration a plus.
