Progress Download ODBC steps

I just had to figure this out, since we were having problems involving Corvu and ODBC. We didn't want to use DataDirect.com for ODBC drivers anymore because that has a fee now.

Question: does anyone know why DataDirect does not mention Progress as a database they support? They seem to still be owned by Progress.

Here is what I did.

Progress calls the OpenEdge ODBC driver "SQL Client Access".

To get this file
visit www.progress.com
go to support login with your progress account
go to software, OpenEdge 10 components, SQL Client Access
note the serial number and control code necessary for win32 version.

download the win32 version
move it to a temp folder
explode the self-extracting zip file
click setup.exe
enter the above serial number and control codes, which will paste
when you do, the choice "OE SQL ACCESS" should appear. click that.

While all this is not very user friendly, at least it works !

An ODBC or SQL driver is of course necessary for each client-networking installation. That is why I went to all the above effort to get Progress's own version of the ODBC/SQL client driver, which is covered by the Progress DBMS license we have for the database server.

New versions of the DataDirect driver are no longer covered by our Progress license, hence no longer free to us. I guess it may be possible existing copies of the DataDirect driver might be covered and usable, but we didn't want to keep depending on what might be obsolete software.

I don't know why that changed, that is a question for Progress / DataDirect.
