How to add dates in Actuate EReporting Suite 5?

Hi,

am trying to add x days to a date.
created a formula and defined
formula as : date(format(date1,"dd/MM/yyyy"))+xDD

encounter error message :
"java.lang.RuntimeException: java.lang.ClassCastException: java.sql.Date at actuate.ereport.engine.expreval.ArithEval.evaluate(ArithEval.java:199) "

appreciate if anybody could help.
