This week the Progress team had the time of their lives with members of the PUG (Progress User Group) community from across Europe at this year’s annual PUG Challenge event. Everyone shipped off to Düsseldorf, Germany for 3 days packed with workshops, sessions, discussions, hackathons, demos and plenty of entertainment! I’d say it was a raving success with almost 400 Progress users in attendance and lots learned in this short time period!

The first day of the event was spent in workshops on everything from Node.js, to enhanced database performance and scalability and advanced OpenEdge development. Post-workshop we held a Progress Partner+ Program reception where PUG members could mingle with other guests, Progress developers and executives, as well as Kimberly King and Jessica Baker who lead our Progress Partner+ Program.

As the day came to an end, the PUG Challenge hackathon was just beginning! This year’s hackathon intended for everyone to learn more about new Progress technologies, create some pretty awesome hacks using Node.js (Modulus/MongoDB), IoT devices, Progress Rollbase, Rollbase Mobile – then win cool prizes like a BeagleBone, Phillips Hue Starter Kit, iPod Touch and Gimbals. To learn more about the hackathon, read more here or tweet Ludovic Aelbrecht (@laelbrecht) and Eduardo Pelegri-Llopart (@Pelegri) who led the hackathon.

Day 2 began with a welcome from Olf Jannsch the Regional PUG Vice President of South, Central and Eastern Europe. Followed by a general session keynote presentation from Jerry Rulli, President of Progress’ OpenEdge Business Unit, who spoke about how our partners are innovating in their markets, what our OpenEdge strategy is and how they can take advantage of services from our newest acquisition, Bravepoint. Attendees also heard from Karen Tegan Padir, President of Progress’ App Dev Business Unit on how the Progress technology portfolio is growing and what trends are set to drive the future of application development. We also heard from Colleen Smith, Progress’ SaaS and Cloud expert on how Progress is continuing to innovate with OpenEdge and other technology!

Energized from the keynotes, attendees made their way to breakouts that ranged from how to use your OpenEdge stack, to how to build an IoT solution and app lifecycle in the cloud. Each very compelling as the leaders of these sessions were many of Progress’ long-standing partners. Following these sessions, PUG members and Progress employees alike got together for a night of fun which involved jamming out to Olf Jannsch’s band, Chamäleon!

Things finished off today with a presentation from HP Helion, this year’s PUG Challenge sponsor, about making the journey from the on-premise world to the cloud ecosystem and how to take advantage of the Progress/HP partnership – followed by a full day of breakouts!
